looking back at my project

As I am wrapping up and preparing to give an end of the year speech, my teacher ask our class to reflect on our individual 20 Time project. So here I go.

I failed. Yes you heard it right, I failed. I was not able to able to host the sled hockey game. By the time I was prepared and ready to host the event, hockey season was over and therefore not many people would be interested in spending there time in a freezing-cold ice rink for a off-season sports game.

Although I did not accomplish my goal of hosting the event this school year, it does not mean that my project is over. I talked to my hockey coach and he said that he is willing to help create this event with me next year and schedule ice time to have our high school girls hockey team play against a sled team like the Michigan Sled Dogs. I hope to continue working on this project and even making it an annual event. When the time comes around next year, I know to start preparing for the event earlier because getting a date that works for both teams is tough.

So even though I technique failed maybe it was for the better? I learned a whole lot more on how I can improve as a person and as an event coordinator, than as I ever could if I succeeded and ended up hosting the sled hockey game. Also, whatever good that might have come out of hosting the event I can hopefully find next year when I make a second attempt to run this game. I would love the opportunity to try this again and I am going to make sure to set aside time to organize this game and who knows possibly even other fundraisers so that I can help a good cause.

To sum this up, I am happy that I failed because it allowed me to use the 20 time project as a learning experience and it gave me the opportunity to gain the tools that I needed to propel into the possibilities of tomorrow.

starting to prepare a speech

So as it gets closer to the end of the school year, it is time to start preparing for a speech that will be given to the class. I decided that I want to try and speak at our schools TEDX event, which means I can talk about any hot science or technology topic of some sort. One topic that I may possibly talk about is "You can do anything but you can't do everything". By this I mean that in schools we learn and try to excel in every subject and are forced into the thinking that to be the best person you have to be the best in every extra-curricular activity. Instead of being the best at everything we as students should try to prioritize things we spend our time on based on our interests. This week I am focusing on trying to research as much as I possibly can about this topic idea for my speech.

Still waiting

I am so ready to have a date for my charity event but due to conflicting schedules I have not been able to set the date. It is really frustrating because I have been struggling with this for a couple weeks now. With limited ice time and the schedule of the players on the Michigan sled dogs, I hope I can find a date and time that fits into both schedules. I will let you know how it goes and hopefully next time I will let you know when the event will take place!

I am still trying to find ice time before Easter break that works with the Michigan Sled Dogs. While I am waiting to find a date, I currently am emailing local businesses to see if they are interested in sponsoring the event. Everything else in regards to hosting this game will have to wait until I secure a date.

A lot has changed over the past couple of days in regards to my project. I decided that I am just going to stick with hosting a sled hockey game instead of also having a wheelchair basketball game. Honestly, I would love to host both, but in reality with everything else going on in my schedule there is not enough time to make both of these events happen with a great turnout.

On the bright side, the sled hockey event is going. I spoke to my high school girls hockey coach, Coach Joe Provenzano, about the event and he love the idea. Matter of fact we are looking into the possibility of making this an annual event! My Coach also has some great connections with MAHA, so he knows the Michigan sled hockey director. The next step is to talk to the manager for the local ice rink to see if I can schedule a slot of ice time for the event. Then I can email back the Michigan sled dogs to make sure that the date works into their schedule. Also I still have to pick out the specific charity I am going to donate the money to. Other than that things are looking great!

Blog post #7

Planning planning planning! That is what I have been doing for the past couple of days. This week I am counting on meeting with our athletic director to find the date and time of the event. Also I hope to contact local businesses to see if they are interested in donating to the event. There is not much going on other than that.

I am working hard on my project. Last week was a little slow because I had to focus on studying for my midterm exams. Now I am back to business as the second semester begins. I have plenty to do, some of which includes contacting the directors of the sled hockey team and the wheelchair basketball team, talking to our schools athletic director, and finalizing the dates for these games. My project is finally ramping up, so I will let you know how much of this I actually accomplish by next week.

Lots of work has been done and still needs to be done on my project. I got an email back from a coordinator for the Detroit Diehards basketball team. They are interested in playing in my charity event! I plan to make a call so that we can figure out more details over the phone instead of a bunch of emails.

As for news and information, I believe that most of the money will be brought in through tickets sells to attend the event and maybe a raffle. The game will most likely be in the main gym at my high school. I still need to talk to the basketball coaches to figure out a date that will work for them.

Instead of just hosting one event, the wheelchair basketball game, I now also plan on hosting a sled hockey game as well. I think this game will most likely be in March after states for our school's hockey teams. I have received an email make from a local sled hockey team, The Michigan Sled dogs, and they said they would love to play in this game to raise money for there team.

My project is on a roll now, as you can see, and there is plenty of stuff to do. This week my goal is to contact the head coaches to see when would be a good time to have their players participate in this event.

Sled hockey

As a hockey player, I periodically check TSN for the latest hockey news. I just watched these videos and I recommend that you watch them too whether or not you are a fan of hockey.
